Brighton thump 10-man Everton on Hurzelers league debut

Result

  • Goals: MacAllister (35), Welbeck (56, 82)
  • Red card: Patterson (53)
  • Attendance: 39,290

Report

Brighton continued their impressive start to the Premier League season with a comfortable victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

Fabian Hurzeler's first game in charge of the Seagulls saw his side dominate from start to finish, with Danny Welbeck causing the Toffees defence problems all afternoon.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half when MacAllister curled home a fine effort from the edge of the area.

Everton's task was made even more difficult when Nathan Patterson was sent off for a second yellow card just after the hour mark.

Welbeck then put the game to bed with two goals in the space of 26 minutes, taking his tally for the season to four.

Match highlights

  • MacAllister's goal was a thing of beauty, curling into the top corner from 20 yards.
  • Welbeck's first goal was a poacher's finish, tapping home from close range after good work from March.
  • The striker's second goal was a clinical strike, firing low into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Full-time thoughts

Brighton were excellent value for their victory and look like a team who could challenge for a top-half finish this season.

Hurzeler will be delighted with the performance of his players, who showed great character and quality to overcome a difficult opponent.

Everton, on the other hand, were poor and will need to improve significantly if they are to avoid another relegation battle this season.
