FDA Investigating New Outbreak of Infections from Salmonella Enteritidis; Eggs Likely Source

Outbreak Linked to Eggs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating a new outbreak of infections from Salmonella Enteritidis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health officials are assisting with the investigation. As of May 2023, there have been 59 reported cases of illnesses in 29 states. The majority of the illnesses have been linked to eggs.

Outbreak Details

The illnesses started on dates ranging from January 19, 2023, to April 29, 2023. Ill people range in age from less than 1 year to 91 years, with a median age of 36 years. Of the 59 people who got sick, 26 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Laboratory testing has found Salmonella Enteritidis in eggs from Rose Acre Farms in Hyde County, North Carolina. The FDA is advising consumers not to eat eggs from this farm.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Stomach cramps
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Symptoms usually start within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts for 4 to 7 days.

Treatment for Salmonella Infection

Most people with a Salmonella infection will recover without treatment. However, some people may need to be hospitalized. Treatment may include:

  • Fluids
  • Electrolytes
  • Antibiotics

Preventing Salmonella Infection

To prevent Salmonella infection, it is important to:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
  • Cook eggs thoroughly.
  • Do not eat raw or undercooked eggs.
  • Do not eat foods that contain raw eggs, such as mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, and some salad dressings.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
  • Do not eat recalled foods.
